After the Snow, Then Came the “Slain”

You know the post I wrote about the beauty of freshly-fallen snow?  How it covers everything like a frosting and makes it look like a fairy-land?  Well, a few days later it looked much different.

It looked like a mess.

We had the left-over snow on the ground.  And then about 3-4 inches of new snow.  So far so good.  Except it then turned to sleet and then rain (slain).

The driveway’s like an unappetizing layer cake.  Heavy snow on the bottom, a thin layer of ice as the filling, and slush on the top.  And because the temperature is barely above freezing, the rain freezes as soon as it hits any bare pavement.  Slippery.  Dangerous.

I have to clear at least part of the driveway, otherwise I’ll just skid all over the place.  I decide to do the top near the door to give myself a running start out of the garage.  And also in case anyone else comes to the house.  And the end of the driveway so I can get out.  But—– I can’t use the snow blower.  I know it won’t handle this stuff.

So shovel it is.  Slowly.  Trying to figure out how to get it off the driveway.  It’s sliding off the shovel like water.  It won’t stay where I’m trying to put it.

Sometimes there are tasks that we have to just slog through.  It isn’t pretty.  It’s hard work.  Like shoveling slush or “slain”.  While trying not to fall down.  It takes determination.  Maybe using different tools or tackling the problem from a different perspective.  And no one’s giving us a medal for doing it.  It’s just part of the job.

Since I own my house, I’m responsible for the upkeep.  Whether it’s clearing snow, leaves, grass, or yes – even “slain”, it’s all part of the package.  No matter how much I wish it would go away, it won’t.

What’s part of your package at work or in life that you’d like to ignore?  What’s the “slain” in your life that you wish would just melt by itself?  Get out there and take it on.  Even if it’s slow going, it’s getting done.  You’ll feel better when you do.

Why not make a commitment to doing that thing you don’t feel like doing by leaving a comment?
