Rhythm of Life – Come Home

Do you know who you are?  Who you really are?  Some of the song you hear about yourself is beautiful and true.  Other parts?  Not so much.

There's a faint whisper in your heart that hints at the truth.  You ignore that still, small voice until it cuts through the noise and whispers once again, “Come home.”

I know how it feels to sing a song that isn't really yours.  I've felt that way myself.  It wasn't always that way. When I was little, I was different.  And then life happened.  Other messages.  Other songs.  Somewhere along the way I got lost.

And then I got sick.  In 2011, I crashed.  I've been in the business of transformation my whole life, and yet I couldn't transform alone.  It took a bunch of people working with me to change my life.

In the process I learned that the mind and body are inextricably linked.  How important we are to one another.  How I had been lulled into complacency.  How singing the world's song had made me shrivel up inside to the point where I didn't know myself any more.   And all along, that quiet voice whispered, “Come home.”

Not home to the person I was as a child.  But home to the person God created me to be.

I'm not there yet.  I probably won't be until the day I die.  But I have learned a thing or two along the way. And I'm here to help you start or keep going on your path too.

It's not so scary when we do it together.  It can even be fun!

Would you like to start this year really kickin’ it, whatever “it” is for you?  Want to be part of a community committed to bring a positive change to your corner of the world?  Then keep listening to this episode, and the ones to come.  Share with your friends and talk together about how you can find your groove and make your lives sing.

Lift your voice to what’s good and beautiful and right in the world.  Come home.

Random Riffs – A Mouse Caper (with a nod to Edgar Allen Poe)

Not long ago I heard a strange noise that sounded like it was coming from the roof or the attic.  Listen to hear what I found and what I did about it…and guess which poem my verse is reminiscent of.

Feature Segment – Why Most Goal-Achievement Programs Don’t Work

It’s the beginning of 2017, and you’ve probably seen all kinds of goal-setting, super-achievement programs for sale. Filled with strategies to help you finally achieve what you’ve dreamed of for ages.  According to them, if you follow their methods you will magically become a ninja goal master.

What do they have in common?  They assume that all you need is more or better information, and you’ll have instant success.

Guess what?  It’s not true.  A plan isn’t the only key to goal success.  There are three keys to goal success.  And the plan opens the smallest lock.  The three keys are

  1. A plan
  2. The right story
  3. Alignment

What’s important about the Plan.

  • Know how to get a project done. Listen to Episode 025 for more details.
  • Make the goal clear
  • Know the difference between a goal and a vision.
  • Identify and change the triggers that cause habitual behavior. Two excellent books on the topic:

The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
Triggers by Marshall Goldsmith

What’s important about the Story.

  • A disempowering story can derail you, even if it is partly or 100% true.
  • Many of these stories are motivated by fear, as described in Episode 052.
  • Others have managed to succeed with fewer resources and more handicaps
  • The best story is about why you CAN, rather than why you can’t.

What’s important about Alignment.

  • Your goals need to actually fit you.
  • Your emotional state must be up for accomplishing goals. There are several reasons why your state might not be up for it now.  Some of these states can be overcome.  Others may be such that you shouldn’t even focus on goal setting right now.  It’s important to understand which emotional states are signals that now’s not the right time and which are tricking you into thinking now’s not the right time.
  • See how your goals will help others.

If your goals don’t align with you, you’ll do everything to subconsciously make them not happen.

If you start out in the right state, with alignment, have a great strategy and an empowering story, you stand a much high chance of success.  And one way to help yourself even more is to get a coach to work with you.  Accountability Groups are another way.  But DON’T tell your friends.

In the end, the plan is dwarfed by your story and alignment.

Most important is the ultimate question – how does this goal align with your ultimate goal, the overall vision for your life?  If it doesn’t, then no plan or story will create success.  You’ll be fighting yourself at a deep level and may not even recognize it.

You’ve got the whole year in front of you.  A clean slate.  A fresh start.  Why not use this time to meditate on your story and alignment, and then go after the plan.  If you want some help, leave a comment or send me an email at Kathleen@kathleenannthompson.com.

Make 2017 the year you break through and do it.  I can’t wait to celebrate with you!
