Episode 089: Break Free – Burn the Boats and Have a Plan B

Maybe you’ve heard people tell you that you have to “burn the boats” to really succeed. That if you believe you can turn back, you will. I’ve always hated that advice, as it was often given to encourage us to “follow your passion”, which seems naïve and risky. Yet, there’s something to this advice. Here’s how to embrace your future and minimize risk at the same time.

How Did THAT Happen?

I have a spot by my kitchen door where I put stuff that’s going to the garage. It might be recyclables, or coupons I want to keep in my car. Or the shopping bags I take with me. Most of the time there might be one or two things in that spot. The bags I just unloaded the groceries from. A few plastic containers to be recycled. But not this day. I went downstairs into the kitchen and saw this.

And asked myself, “How did THAT happen?”

Get Your Message Heard Above the Noise

We live in a world of noise.  Now that everyone can be their own media company, it feels like everyone is doing it.  Video, podcasts, radio, streaming music.  Your car and Alexa talk to you.  Even banks have gotten into the act.  Bank of America just announced Erica, a virtual assistant on its mobile app.  And noise isn’t limited to what you hear.  There’s also the noise inside people’s heads.  All the things that distract them.  And now you start to talk.

Will anyone hear you above the noise?

There Is No Back. There Is Only Forward.

Our small group was talking about growing through grief and loss.  We spoke of Job, and how his life was changed in an instant.  As we heard his story, my mind went back to my illness in 2011.  Remembering the pain and shame of not sleeping.  The confluence of other circumstances that brought me down…in a big way.  To the point where I could barely work or take care of myself.

(c) Ann Thompson. I did come back to life.

I remembered just how much it took to bring me back to life.

A New View Changes Everything

You’re standing in your bedroom, folded clothes in hand.  You open the dresser drawer to put them in, and they won’t fit.  You stare at the clothes and then at the drawer.  And then you ask yourself, “What if I folded these clothes differently?”  All of a sudden, all the clothes fit in the same space where they didn’t fit before.  And you ask yourself,

“Why didn’t I think of that before?”

Episode 087: Break Free – Past Your Upper Limit

You’ve heard of the glass ceiling?  Something you can’t see and yet prevents women from attaining the top positions?  Well, I discovered a nylon ceiling.  One that is equally invisible and keeps us from reaching our potential.  And what’s worse, it’s just flexible enough to let us grow – a little.  If you want to grow more than that?  You have to break free from that nylon ceiling.  Your upper limit.  On this episode, I talk about how I got caught, and what you can do to break free.
