T Minus 1 – Time to Prioritize…and Late to Bed

Okay, time to get real.  What’s the most important?  Packing or sweeping the garage?  I mean really.  You know what it’s like.  You don’t want to come home to a messy house, so you do all the things you haven’t done in ages.  Like file the paid bills.  The homeowner’s insurance policy.  Clean off the kitchen counters.

(c) Kathleen Thompson Gotta make that sink shine! Is that really the highest priority?

Polish the kitchen sink.

And that wasn’t even on the list.

I was going to mow the lawn.  That was a high priority, knowing how long I’ll be gone.  But, that decision was made for me, as it’s been pouring rain all week.  Not going to happen.  The grass will be what it is at this point.

For some reason, organizing papers and files seems to take the longest.  What do I really think I’ll get done while I’m gone – without my laptop?  Can I use my iPad to do some stuff?  Will I even want to?  I’m on vacation.  Yet, I also know that my creative mind might kick into gear, so I want to have some files or papers in case inspiration hits me.

Then there’s the suitcase.  I’m pretty good at mix-and-match clothes and light layers to minimize the bulk.  But the charging cords and food I take with me weighs the suitcase down.  Still at my goal of 2 carry-on bags.  A rollerboard and an everyday bag, along with my small purse.

It’s the little things.  Like the umbrella, scarf, zip lock bag for wet things, belt.  Did I remember socks?  The list that isn’t on the list running through my head.

Still, I do take time out.  For lunch.  To practice my voice exercises.  To talk to my friend, Ruth.  To go to a meeting.  Get some of those last-minute things done for other people.

Yes, even though the pace is a little more hectic, I still have fun.  I’m still present.  This is the most fun I’ve had preparing for a trip in a very long time.

But, even after deciding on my highest priorities and eliminating some from even taking up space in my brain, I got to bed later than I planned or wanted to.  Because tomorrow night I’ll be on the plane.  And I don’t expect to sleep more than about an hour.

All in all, even with the late bedtime from trying to race the clock, it still was a more enjoyable pace and felt lighter than the last day of prep for any other trip.

What has it been like for you on the day before a trip?  Do you have any other tips for me?  The most fun happens in the comments.
